Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus, often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other organs in the pelvis. This tissue responds to the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle, just like the lining of the uterus, and can cause pain, inflammation, and the formation of scar tissue.
Endometriosis can affect fertility in a few ways. One of the most common ways is by causing damage or blockage to the fallopian tubes, which can prevent the egg from being fertilized by the sperm. Endometriosis can also interfere with ovulation, the release of the egg from the ovary, and make it more difficult for the egg to implant in the uterus. Additionally, endometriosis can cause inflammation and scarring in the pelvic area, which can affect the function of the reproductive organs.
It is estimated that about 30-50% of women with endometriosis experience fertility problems. However, not all women with endometriosis will have difficulty getting pregnant. The severity of the endometriosis, as well as other factors such as age and overall health, can also impact fertility.
Treatment for endometriosis-related infertility may include medications to regulate the menstrual cycle, surgery to remove endometrial tissue or repair damage to the reproductive organs, and assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Women with endometriosis who are trying to conceive may benefit from consulting with a fertility specialist to discuss their options.
