What Is a Pap Smear?

A Pap smear (or Pap test) is a routine screening procedure that checks for cervical cancer and abnormal cells in the cervix. It's one of the most effective tools for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer in women.

**Who needs one?** Women should begin Pap smears at age 21, regardless of sexual activity. From 21–65, testing is recommended every 3 years, or every 5 years combined with an HPV test after age 30.

**What to expect:** The procedure takes just minutes in a doctor's office. A speculum is inserted, and a small brush collects cervical cells for lab analysis. Mild discomfort or light spotting afterward is normal.

**Why it matters:** Caught early, cervical abnormalities are highly treatable. Regular screening has reduced cervical cancer deaths dramatically over decades.
